'Attack on Titan' Ep. 25: Something's Odd About Those Walls...

Wow. I just checked the stats for post views and this one has over 29,000 37,000 views! Thanks for all the feedback and discussion! Perhaps it's time to do another summary post...

WAIT A MINUTE!
The greatest part of speculative discussion is that someone might point out something that I missed, allowing me to either improve or altogether abandon my own theories. However, these Attack on Titan posts have been edited and updated numerous times. They were in desperate need of abridgment, so I've summarized the theories here (WARNING: SPOILERS!):

Click Here! >> "What we can share so far..." << Click Here!

That said, feel free to read the following post. However, most of these theories have been disputed, so be sure to read the summary post!

Truth be told, I put this off as long as I could. Episode 25 is the last episode of Attack on Titan, and I really didn't want it to end. I hope this is just the last episode of 'this season', and not 'THE' last episode. Of course, with a cliffhanger like the one they threw out at the end of the episode, I don't know how they can just leave it at that... (Major Spoilers: Up to Episode 25!)

This is the battle we've been waiting for, and it did not disappoint...
First off, that battle between Annie and Eren was intense. It seems that he's found his "titan power" so to speak, like Annie's ability to harden her skin. His appears to be a sort of berserk mode, which makes him crazy powerful and unstoppable.

Adrenaline level during this scene: 11/10
He loses both arms and a leg by the end, but he tears Annie apart while doing so. She tries to climb the wall to get away, a pretty incredible feat considering her face has been unexpectedly restructured and her leg bitten off. But then Mikasa shows up, severs her fingers, gives a witty one-liner, and watches Annie plunge back down to the ground.

"Have a nice  trip! See you next  fall!"
Where Eren rips her head off and opens up her neck. However, he hesitates when he sees her. Then something peculiar happens: she traps herself in carbonite.

I know, I know... not carbonite...
Then there's a lot of talking. Commander Erwin, although blamed for the catastrophic destruction of Stohess, assures the 'council' that they are close to answers, and at the very least have learned that there are indeed people who can transform into titans other than Eren. The Legion is given control over the frozen Annie, in hopes that one day they may figure out a way to get her out so she can spill the beans. Eren recovers, and Mikasa once again reaffirms that she is the hopeless love interest in the story.

"Hopeless", not "helpless". There's quite a difference.
But this episode didn't give us many answers. I'm pretty sure that, since they didn't kill her off, Annie will someday return. There were several flashbacks to her life before she joined the military, both in earlier episodes and a lot in this one, but I don't think we have the whole story. Obviously we still don't know how she got the power to transform into a titan, whether it was injected into her like Eren, or if she possessed the power from birth passed on from her parents (if that's even possible). I think she still has quite a role to play, but we'll have to wait and see what it is...

Who is your daddy, and what does he do?
Again, we are subtly reminded that there is still something in the basement at Eren's house in Shiganshina.

Just in case we had somehow forgotten...
This is the biggest question of the series... or, at least, it was...

Question: What is up with the walls?
First off, the "What we can share so far" cards before and after the commercial break give us a story of a miner who tried to dig under one of the walls so that he could live in prosperity on the other side. From this story we find out that the walls go underground, deep underground. Not only that, they also extend beneath the ground like bedrock. This is an incredible piece of information, one only superseded by the mind-blowing revelation after the credits.

SWEET... CUPPIN'... CAKES.
Chills ran down my spine as I clapped my hands over my mouth and tried to contain myself. There are titans inside the walls! So many things ran through my mind:

THEORY 1: The chicken or the egg?
Again, I wonder who built the walls. The technology required for such a feat of engineering is far beyond any capabilities the humans have. My question is, which came first: the walls or the city? Did the humans stumble upon the walls and build their cities inside? Did they build the gates, or were the gates already there? I'm pretty sure it was stated in the anime that the walls came first, but not much has been revealed about the history of this world other than there had been one hundred years of peace up until the attack on Shiganshina. But where did they come from and who built them?

I was gripping my chair's armrests during this scene, just waiting for Mr. Behemoth titan to zap down and attack again...
THEORY 2: Why are there titans inside the walls?
Did the ancient humans somehow defeat the some of the titans and use them as a base to build the walls? The face in the wall appears to be another "human form" titan, so did he and others like him sacrifice themselves to make the walls stronger or to build the walls in the first place? Was it a voluntary thing, or were they forced into it? Are the walls a prison? Are the titans dead, or is there a possibility they will break out? This is a whole new twist that's been thrown at us, and I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of it.

Someone is going to get a very unpleasant surprise when they go to plug those holes...
UPDATE! BUNKER THEORY
An anonymous commentor below reminded me that when Hanji did the experiments on Sonny and Bean in episode 15, she cut them off from sunlight and they went "to sleep". These titans in the walls haven't seen sunlight for at least over a hundred years. However, we know that titans give off an incredible amount of heat. The question is, do they give off that heat when they're inert? If so, could they be used as a sort of "biothermal" generator? If this is the case, what are they powering? As stated above, the walls go beneath the ground like bedrock, but what's beneath that? Is it... a bunker whose power comes from the heat given off from the imprisoned titans?

*Touch* *Tssssssssssss* *Fizzle* *Pop*
UPDATE! TITAN ORIGIN THEORY
Perhaps this is not the right post for this to be in, but while watching episode 15 again to refresh my memory for the update above, I listened to Hanji's explanation of her experiments and experiences with the titans she's captured or killed. It was expressed here (and possibly a few times before and after episode 15) that the titans are far lighter than they should be. Something that size shouldn't be able to stand, much less walk or run, but they can because their bodies are lighter. She then says (in the translation I read) that, "The titans we see and the titans of actuality might be different things all together." Does this mean that the titans we've seen throughout the show are "fake" titans? If so, what are "real" titans? Well...

This one was... not real?
THEORY: The titans inside the walls are the real titans. The titans we see in the show are the result of a scientific experiment gone wrong when trying to produce the "titan juice", an elixir that was meant to turn normal humans into a titan-like beings in order to protect humanity and fight the "real" titans OR the fake titans were created in a test tube for the purpose of protecting humanity but were uncontrollable and attacked human and titan alike, which led to the creation of the titan elixir in order to stop both the real and fake titans. Eventually the "real" titans were killed off or otherwise incapacitated, but the "fake" titans remain. This could explain why the "fake" titans attack Titan Eren in Trost (eps. 5-13) and consume Titan Annie in the forest (ep. 20), because the fake titans are naturally inclined to do so.

THEORY 3: Are the basement and walls connected?
In my "What's in the basement?" post, I speculated that the world these characters live in is Earth, several hundred years after an apocalypse. I speculated that there may be an old computer in the basement of Eren's house, or at the very least some form of advanced technology that the memories his father gave him through the titan juice injection would help him use or decipher. I still think this is the case, but I think the information in the basement is something much more than what the titans are. I think that the basement contains an archive of knowledge, in which the history of the world is kept. But this raises another question: what kind of information do the titans not want the humans to know? What could possibly be so important that they utterly decimated Shiganshina to keep Eren's father away from his research?

UPDATE! BUNKER THEORY: With the "bunker theory" proposed in the theory above, could Eren's basement be an entrance to a bunker beneath the walled area? Is said bunker where Eren's father did his research, and is it where he's currently hiding?

What secrets are you hiding?
I was rather worried at the end of the episode when no "To be continued" screen popped up, but this enormous cliffhanger is just as blatant. Obviously there's more: we haven't even caught up to the manga, and it's still being written. I do hope we don't have to wait too long for the next season, or I might just have to cave and read the manga.

Of course, one last "dem eyes" moment...
Anyhoo, that'll probably be it for anime on this blog for a while, at least regular updates like this. I never intended for this blog to become an "anime blog", although the past several posts have been all Attack on Titan posts. Perhaps I can play some more games and get some more insightful posts out there now that the show's over.

If you want to read more speculation about the show, here's where it's at:

With the ending of the show, we've been left with huge cliffhangers. Some of us like the feeling of suspense we get from waiting for the next episode. I will ask that you please do not put spoilers in the comments. Please be decent people.

  1. I'm the anonymous that's been really excited about you getting to this point.

The wall titans are huge(I mean that figuratively). Not many people speculate on them. However I think I have it nailed down how they got there. Sadly you're missing one crucial piece of information that came in the following chapters regarding the structure of the walls.

Here's some anime/manga differences for you:
    - After cutting down Annie, Mikasa stayed up on the wall while gaping at the titan inside the wall. She stayed there for some time. Armin was the one who grabbed Eren after he came out of titan form. They took Mikasa down off the wall in the anime because the show had to have more finality rather than leaving it at that crucial scene.
    - Eren didn't "berserk" in the manga. By that I mean he didn't glow or anything. That's just him being angry and the anime making it look cool.
    - They never stated that the walls went underground and connected underneath the city. But I assume Isayama canonized that because that would help with an upcoming plot point. Very important anime-only part.

Also important, remember Hanji's experiments with Sawney and Bean.

And I have one question. Was Eren ever able to damage a part of Annie's titan form that had been hardened? It's been a while so I don't recall.

    1. I'm glad you got back to me with this!

      > I don't think there's any sort of finality in the way they ended off the first season. That cliffhanger sounds just as crazy as the one we got in the anime.
      > It's interesting that the whole "walls go underground" bit was an anime only revelation. Now I'm intrigued as to what this "upcoming plot point" is (but I don't want spoilers, obviously).
      > I'll have to go back and watch some of the earlier episodes, but I don't think they ever mention in the anime exactly what experiments Hanji did to Sawney and Bean.
      > I don't believe they ever showed Eren completely damaging one of Annie's hardened skin plates, but there is a part in episode 25 when Eren is biting down on her leg and the plate appears to be cracking.

Glad to hear from you again! Keep the speculation flowing!

    2. I think they did show Hanji's experiments because I saw at least one gif on Tumblr showing her shoving that giant pole into Bean's eye while she's crying out loud.

And thanks. Just curious about if he could break it because of other relevant speculation because of more upcoming plot points' revelations.

  2. I've just finished watching attack on titan and wanted to have an idea of what the last scene was about. Came across your site and I dont know why there aren't more people on here!!!

Excellent blog man going to start reading through all your reviews of the episodes. Finding out more info about the episodes that I didnt pick up the first time round!

Also yeah they did expirements like keeping sonny and bean in the dark and poking it in the eye. Also eren did manage to crack the diamond bit by biting on it.

  3. I'm glad you enjoyed the post! I didn't do reviews of all the episodes, but I did review most of the last half of the anime. Feel free to read up on the speculation posts and leave your own speculation and theories in the comments! I love talking speculation!

  4. Just before i start i dont read the comics/manga i prefer moving pictures lol.

    1) One thing I just thought of is: what if it was the titans that were the ones who were living inside the walls in the first place? A person or a group of people discovered the walls, somehow opened the gates and unleashed the titans into the world. Only way a human can open the gates is from the inside and maybe they came up through erens basement (I'm implying here that erens basement leads outside the walls somewhere). Then once all the titans escaped what was left of humanity funnelled back into the walls and built cities.

    2) do we know if Annie's dad and erens dad were buddies? Maybe they were and something went wrong Eg. Disagreement in ideas of what to do.

Still trying to wrap my head around so many questions like the technology difference and those screenshots that show up with info about the miners, walls 3dm gear etc. And Colossus titan. If they dont make a 2nd season soon my brains going to melt...

    1. 1. You know, I hadn't considered that first one! What if Eren's basement does lead outside? Or what if it leads to something beneath the walled off areas? As the story of the miner stated, the wall extends underground beneath the entirety of the area behind the wall, like a bedrock of sorts. What if Eren's basement is an entrance to whatever lies beneath that?

      2. That thought had crossed my mind. Perhaps Annie's father thought they should use the titan serum, while Eren's believed they should do more tests before using it. It really makes you wonder just how much Eren's father really knows. Does he know who the titans are? Was he meeting with them when Shigansha fell?

We say the biggest question is, "What's in the basement?", but there are so many huge questions that need answering. Where did Eren's dad go? What's up with the walls? Where did the titans come from and why are they doing what they're doing? Who's the Behemoth/Colossus titan? Now we can add, "What lies beneath?" and "What does Eren's dad know?" to those.

My brain's on the verge of melting too...

    2. Hey awesome Speculation! Just finished Anime and read this to see if I could get some more knowledge, it opened me eyes a bunch!!
This got me thinking... did we ever see outside the walls? Once? What if this is like 'The Truman Show' and Eren's basement is the way out...
Idk again just speculation. What do you think thougg? Possible at all? Could help explain the wall-titan at the end. He's kinda like the overseer.

  5. In a sense I feel like it was the perfect 1st season. I dont know how long the manga is but all this definitely sets it up perfectly for the 2nd season and beyond. Although I feel like once we get to the basement a lot of things might become clearer.

Another thing i dont understand is why did Annie cry when Levi sliced her mouth open to get eren. But then just before she went titanmode she had that crazy look on her face while talking to Armin...

Whats certain is that commander Erwin is a beast. He definitely knows much more than what he said in the last scene. Think him and Armin will be working together more in the next season.

  6. This blog is brilliant but i have one theory about the titans in the wall. Hanji's experiments did include blocking them off from sunlight and they seemed to be inactive after a period of time without sunlight... i was thinking as the titans inside the wall would have no access to sunlight maybe they have stayed inactive for this whole time and now that the wall has cracked the titan in the wall has access to sunlight and could become active again? I may be wrong but just a thought i had:) Keep up the blog ill be reading on once the new episodes come out if they do (HOPEFULLY!)

  7. Check it out.

    Bunker theory:
Yes, I believe that the basement holds some sort of library of information. I believe that this store of knowledge (much like Mikasa's heritage) has been passed down through Eren's family for generations, and that his ancestors had a hand in the creation of the titans.

    Titans in the walls:
This is just my humble speculation, but I don't think it's a huge jump so bear with me. We know that humans can make hybrid titans. That much we know for certain. I believe the titans in the walls are hybrids. I also believe I believe that before the fall, there were titan soldiers who much like Eren fought for the sake of humankind. However, during the fall of humanity when the pure titans were overwhelming Earth's defenses, these titans were encased within the walls as a sort of last line of defense. Should the titans ever be able to breach the walls, these hybrids will awake from their hibernation and come to the aid of the people.

    1. Your theory about the titans in the walls is a good one, but those walls are at least a hundred years old. Is a human "driver" preserved while inside the titan, or do they age normally? Wouldn't they need sustenance to survive? Air?

Are they even alive? I think it's safe to assume they would be. Normally, titan bodies evaporate when dead. However, if they're "real" titans, we don't know that they evaporate. Evaporation may be a side effect of the "titan juice" not being pure enough to sustain a titan body. Perhaps this is why "human" and "fake" titans evaporate when they die.

However, if the titans inside the walls are alive then:
      1. They're "real titans", have no drivers, and go into hibernation mode when deprived of sunlight.
      2. They're "human titans" and the drivers have been preserved for over a hundred years.
      3. They could be "human titans", but the drivers have been fused together with their titan bodies.

As for why they were in there, you have the "biothermal generators" theory, which could be true for either the real titan or the human titan theories ("real" titans were captured and sealed away while their heat was used for power OR "human" titans sacrificed themselves willingly to be sealed away and used for power), or the "last defense" theory... which ultimately failed because Wall Maria was breached by kicking in the gate and not bashing down the wall.

      Delete
    2. Yes, the Colossal Titan kicked down the gate, but remember that the CT is a hybrid titan. The human drivers of Colossal, Behemoth, and Female apparently know a whole lot more than we or the protagonists do. It's very possible that the enemy hybrids knew about the titans in the walls and thus attacked the one place that they could be sure had none. Otherwise it doesnt make sense attacking only the gate when the gate is most likely the strongest part of the wall. CT could easily level a huge portion and the humans would have no hope of fixing it. There has to be a method to the madness at play here.

      Delete
    3. Also I would like to point out that Annie can preserve herself indefinitely.

      Delete
    4. Forgive me for not clarifying: I too believe that the people inside the hybrid titans know more than we or the protagonists do, and that they probably attacked the gate because they knew what was in the walls. To me, the gates seem almost like they game later; something about their construction just doesn't match up with the rest of the walls. I know the religious fanatics are loathe to add or change anything about the walls, but were there even gates to begin with? The walls are just stone, but because they're construction is far beyond the given human capabilities they are regarded as divine. The Maria, Rose, and Sina crests on the gates and the names Maria, Rose, and Sina themselves seem to have been put in place after the areas inside were settled. So are those the original gates, or were they built by the humans who moved in? I say it failed because the titans knew how to bypass the danger.

As for Annie preserving herself, yes, she seems to be able to preserve herself inevitably. However, when she encased herself in the crystal, she effectively cut herself off from her titan body and the body began to dissolve. If the titans inside the walls are hybrids with human drivers, is it possible that they're still alive after over a hundred years? If they encased themselves as she did, shouldn't their bodies have dissolved?

      Delete
    5. They wouldnt dissolve based on the way Eren can regenerate. It can be concluded that hybrid pilots are able to regenerate their bodies which gives them pretty much imortality.

This conclusion is logically reached when we consider that the human Pilot fuses with the flesh of their Titan hybrid and this connection to their central nervous system enables them to remotely control the beast. If they could not regenerate, they would all become dissfiggured when attempting to break free of the Titan shell.

There is 1 thing about this that bugs me though.. bit of a continuity error perhaps...When Eren turns into the skeletal framed Titan to protect his friends from cannon fire, He bleeds from the nose.. why? It is the only time his body is implied to be breaking down internally. But when he loses limbs he heals back including entire organs assumadely.

To me it is almost like the story was going to take 1 direction but then the creators changed their mind I don't understand the reason for that.

Is this story based on Earth? Is the year getting lower as time progresses meaning they are in B.C. ? If so, I don't think we would see advanced tech in a bunker below.. but their tech is too advanced for B.C. Syringes O.o Where were they manufactured their tech is definitely not precise enough for that.. so if that is the case.. maybe there is a third option

The year is what it is and has to connection to A.D. or B.C. this is because history has been destroyed from the appocolypse caused by the Original conflict with True pure Titans. The syringe then would be a relic from the burried city or a clue that Erens dad has located advanced tech from before the Titans arrived.

So unless this and the tech required to mine and compress gas into cannisters were just oversights to make the story work.. it means there Must be a lost history and timeline caused by something/s arriving. The origjnal pure blooded Titans not these hybrids or Ghoul Titans.

I dont know if the ones in the walls are a generator but they are alive, dorment and function as reinforcement to the wall integrity. If we thjnk abiut it hard enough.. the pilot of the Colossal Titan (sorry about my spelling in this post) must be one of those from Erens home town as it appears 2 times and the number of candidates who fit the bill is heavily reduced each time.

Process of elimination could likely reveal who it is piloting that one as well.

We know that the pilot usually holds a strong resemblance to their Titan form..so do we know any characters that fit the bill? Knowing the identity of this pilot might give further clues as to their motivation to see the human race become overpowered by the Ghoul Titan fakes.

    6. This is a super late comment, but as I watched this show, there were a few cases where someone says that the titans have a very high body temperature compared to a human, so if they bleed out, their blood would evaporate due to the heat... But now that I say that, if it happens outside the body, why wouldn't that occur when its inside the body...

      Delete
    7. Also, I don't know if this is proven at this point, but, when Annie tries to escape over the wall, how could she survive out there on her own? Can she live as a titan indefinitely? Is there a strain the body takes in assuming titan form? Leads me to believe there is some safehouse/organization that she can retreat to, and that this organization has something against whoever lives inside the walls. (the humans, not the titans INSIDE the walls)

  8. Wait a minute im reading the "titans in the walla theory and realized something, when eren help get trost back(smashes boulder into place) he actually CRACKS the wall. so in your theory, sunlight would go through those cracks and rejuvenate the titans. so I think that these titans are only in wall Sina, ready to come out and help with the destruction of humanity when it is breached

    Replies
    1. I watched that episode again, but it doesn't look like to me that the walls were cracked enough for sunlight to get in. Perhaps if some bits and pieces were to fall, maybe, but that doesn't actually happen. In fact, it doesn't show how they repaired the walls, or even if they did.

This brings up the point that there are very many secrets floating around that only a select few know. The 3DM gear's construction and function is one. I believe the fact that there are titans inside the walls is another. Whoever's job it is to fix the walls is probably privy to such sensitive info.

  9. In response to "rptee":
There were certain parts of your theories that I'm pretty sure were not covered in the anime (The wall's composition, for instance), therefore I censored them. Thanks for the thoughts though, and I'm glad you enjoy the forum!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Your theory's sound pretty bad. Im hoping for your sake you're not a writer. Remember that the walls have been broken/repaired/destroyed many times in the show, yet there have been no titans in the wall found. I'd have a hard time believing that the titan in the wall is doing anything other than spying or is the wall itself or something like that. Anything else seems impractical. But anyways, what the point of thinking up silly theories when the true story is already written. Turn off your TV and go read.

    ReplyDelete

    1. First off, I find it ironic that you're criticizing my writing when your grammar is atrocious.

Secondly, yes, I am a bit of a writer. In fact, I've spent three years writing this blog. I'm also currently working on a book. But that's besides the point. As I explained in some of my other posts, some of us enjoy the act of speculation. Sure, I could go read the manga and know exactly what's going on, but I choose not to because I like to exercise my brain through speculation. Even if I'm wrong, I still had a good time.

As for the walls being destroyed several times during the show: Yes, they have. However, we know that the operation and maintenance of the 3DM gear is a closely guarded secret which only a select few are privy to. Is it so hard to believe that something as important as the walls wouldn't be as closely guarded? Those with the authority and expertise needed to fix the walls could possibly already know what's inside.

I intend to continue thinking up these silly theories. I don't intend to let people who don't like to think tell me what to do.

    2. Oh yes! You have burned him very well!

  11. the walls have been destroyed but not in that depth and not by a big enough titan.
the colossal titan only destroyed the gate and the armored titan only destroyed and bigger hole of the second gate so the gates are probably the only area with no titans because the colossal titan the ape titan, the armored titan only destroyed what the had to not the whole wall because they could have done that instead but they didn't so??????

    1. I can't understand this comment lol, but the blogger won't listen to your thoughts regardless because he won't read the manga (ape titan.)

      Delete
    2. Just to be clear: It's not that I 'won't' read the manga. I own the manga (up to book 6, and plan on buying more), but I've decided to forgo reading them in the interest of speculation. I don't want things that are common knowledge in the manga to spoil the secrets of the anime. However, if we go for more than a year and hear nothing from Isayama about a second season, I will be reading the manga. I think a year is long enough of a wait, especially since I do want to know what happens.

As for the comment, I believe the commentor was saying that the colossal and armored (or "ape") titans destroyed the gates because they knew that there were no titans inside the walls there. I believe that's true. They destroyed only what they needed to in order to allow the other titans to invade.

      Delete
    3. That's actually an approach I should have taken and waited for the second season before I kept reading the manga as well. But from my experience of the two, I think you should read the manga because by comparison of the manga and what is portrayed in the anime, there are many significant differences between the two. I actually like the anime's interpretation of the story so much more. So even though I'm not completely impressed with the manga's continuation of the story, I can be excited for the future and how the anime will out-do it.

The amored titan is not the "ape titan". The commentor's mention of the the "ape titan" is a reference from a recent chapter of the manga. I know how this can be confusing to someone who hasn't read it yet, so that's what I was making clear to he or she.

Some thoughts about the actively choosing to destroy the gates... If there were no titans in those walls, what point is trying to avoid damaging them by aiming for the gates when destroying the walls as well would not expose any titans?

      Delete
    4. Did anyone notice the flash of lightning before the Colossal titan appeared in the first episode
so as we have seen that lightning precedes a titan transformation
maybe someone transformed into the colossal titan
      and then kicked the wall

    5. Goongala, I'm really curious about this and I'm wondering if you have any idea's/speculations:
The titans were said to "consume not kill" or something along those lines, but do it out of hatred or bloodlust?? Do they hate the humans? Does it tie into what is in the basement?

      Delete
    6. To be honest, I haven't watched AoT in over two years, so the details are hazy. If I remember correctly, they don't actually need to eat and they only eat humans. In my other posts I speculated that the titans may be some sort of military experiment. Perhaps an all consuming desire to kill humanity might be in their DNA, so to speak.

  13. There are many theories here about the walls. I think speculators should consider information provided. The SnK wikia page states a simple definition for the origin of the walls, which is: "the walls were built more than a century ago, when humanity was on the brink of extinction." So if this statement is found true, reliable, and can be cited from somewhere in the anime (for the sake of speculation in this blog and abiding its "rules"), then many questions and theories may need second consideration. This means no titans living behind walls, and no humans coming, taking over the walls, invading and claiming the territory for themselves... lol. However, I can't say for certain whether this is true.

It's nice to know that there are others confused about the world of SnK out there haha. Please give me feedback or information. Coming from someone who loves the anime, is currently reading the original Shingeki no Kyojin manga, the light novel Before the Fall, the manga adaptation of the light novel, and the Birth of Levi/"Gaiden" spin off and is STILL confused. If not, even more so.

    1. You forget that the walls were apparently built using the hybrid titans as a base, which meant either the survivors knew what was inside the walls and had a hand in helping to build them, or the people inside the walls now settled there after the walls were built and had no idea about the wall titans. I would assume that the answer is a mixture of both; at the very least Eren's father and many of the hybrid titans know what's going on. The ancestors of those who built the walls could be the heads of the current government, trying to protect the ignorant masses from usurpers and/or people who believe the titans are a "superior form of life".

I read the wiki article about the walls (wary of any possible spoilers), and that got the gears turning again. There's another question that I think a lot of people are failing to bring up: the year is 845. What happened 845 years ago that warranted a calendar reset?

      This speculation and more here:
      http://goongalasgrumbles.blogspot.com/2014/02/attack-on-titan-speculation-what-we-can.html

    2. Remember that "hybrid titans" is still your own speculation. Specifications of the titans within the walls are still unclear. Being built "over a century ago" as it says, means over 100 years before Eren's time. Not 200 years or 300 years or so forth but a little over 100 years. I believe the wikia page continues that the wall's purpose was to defend their last stronghold, if you will. How they were built, is of course, becoming evident, with the fact being titans are in them. (At least wall Sina).

The idea that "the people inside the walls now settled there after the walls were built" cannot be true. The humans didn't settle upon the already existing walls because that's not what it is says in the wall's definition of origin.

And I definitely don't know how it could be a mixture of both theories when the first theory assumes the public knew about the titans in the walls and the second is that they didn't know. Those are two completely opposite conjectures.

I do agree though, that the majority of humans during the time didn't know How the walls appeared. Possibly overnight? Maybe that's why there are religious cults that see the walls as gods? What we know from what the anime has given so far, is that there are some people within the inner walls that are hiding something. Ancestors of the current government seems prominent.

I would think the calendar reset was the start of the "apocalypse" and humanity's start towards extinction at the hands of the titans. But who knows??

    3. I keep forgetting you haven't read the manga, or the other adaptations.. If you would have, you'd know that the story "Before the Fall" starts 70 years before the original. Meaning, the titans have not attacked in only 30 years time. Meaning, this is even closer to the time in which the walls originated, but not close enough unfortunately.

I expand more on these thoughts in this forum:
      http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=643479

There also is no say this story goes exactly accordingly to Isayama Hajime's ideas.

    4. In episode one, Armin says that it had been a hundred years since the walls had been "breached", which doesn't necessarily mean that they had been "built" a hundred years ago. Also, something that happened two or three hundred years ago still falls under the category of "Over a hundred years ago".

Your point of the walls appearing overnight is mind blowing. It's completely possible and would give the "Wallists" a lot more credibility. One of the biggest hurdles I was facing in my speculation was why there weren't more people who knew where they came from, but this theory would solve that. However, I still stand firm that the titans in the walls are human hybrids. Otherwise they never would have been able to build the walls so quickly, efficiently, and without anyone knowing.

      Delete
    5. I don't exactly think anything a young boy (Armin) says calls for much credibility regardless. Because there are tons of secrets the government is hiding from the public anyways. That much is true. They could have very well been taught to think that nothing has happened in "Over a hundred years".

This is also part of the storyline of "Before the Fall" because 70 years in the past, a titan did appear within the inner walls. Something was then done to keep this information hidden. However that much is not clear yet as the story has yet to reach that far.
-then again as previously stated, this adaptation may not go accordingly to Isayama's ideas.

  14. New participant here. I love the anime and have enjoyed this thread too.

I want to bring up a few interesting points that I feel will play a large role in season two: namely the idea that the titans we see may not be the titans of actuality. I find this particularly interesting and can see the show taking a metaphysical direction. It seems that the mass and composition of titans differs greatly from that of humans, although they as humanoids...what does that mean? My mind wonders towards the possibility that all titans are man made, created in our own image if you will. Whether they are human driven by way of "titan juice / extract of titan / essence of titan" or just the more prevalent titans stomping around I believe it was just mad science gone awry. I think the basement will lend itself to revealing that page in mankind's history.

Side note - did anyone else find it strange that during the Attack on Trost chapter we find out that Eren had ruthlessly killed grown men as a method of vengeance/rescue of Mikasa? I felt it was a bit out of place with the portrayal of Eren in the first five episodes (he came across as someone who dreamed big but was rather helpless).

I'm re-watching the series now, considering I watched all 25 episodes in three nights a few weeks ago, my memory is a bit fuzzy. I really want to find all of the commercial break slides with extra information.

    1. Eren's murderous past is quite odd, I will agree. Always glad to have new participants!

    2. I think it was a perfect portrayal of Eren. Yes Eren is weak and helpless but when it comes to helping someone, saving someone, or protecting someone, Eren does NOT fuck around. That's obvious in many other occasions. Gets his leg bitten off? Still saves Armin. Gets his titan jaw punched off by titan Annie? Comes back at her with a huge uppercut. Gets impaled by a huge wooden steak? Still turns titan mode and kicks Annie's ass.

    3. That is very true. I rescind my previous comment in light of those examples.

  16. Great post!

I didn't see any comments regarding this but I thought I'd point this out.
Just prior to triggering Annie in Episode 23, it is explained that the tunnel they wanted to escort her through was originally constructed as a means to get to an "underground city" they were planning to build, but that the plan (if I recall) fell through.

Did it really fall through? Did that service tunnel actually lead somewhere crucial? And even if it didn't, what if that "underground city" does exist, and what if that's the reason the walls run so deep?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That completely skipped my mind. Perhaps it could have been sanctioned by the government as an entrance to the underground city/bunker? Or maybe it was something started by the city but abandoned (and hushed up) when they hit the bedrock layer beneath. Perhaps they didn't know the bedrock extended so far inside the walls? Hmmm... speculative juices are flowing! Thanks for the ideas!

  17. Ok so my whole theory of the Titans and the walls is this...If you look at the second ending of the anime (With the rolling Walnut) it shows a picture of what looks like 2 kingdoms fighting eachother. So maybe they made Titans as weapons against one another? So my guess would be that Annie's Ancestors were enemies of the wall, which would explain why shes destroying them and the people inside. As for the Titan inside the wall, it could possibly be someone else who was from the other kingdom and was captured and was preserved in the walls.

    1. That ending always stood out in my mind too, good work

    2. Following your theory, I watched the second ending while pausing it to view the pictures on the walls, it appears to show the wall being attacked by ships people and titans which would mean you are right and the titans were used as weapons by one kingdom against another

      Delete
    3. To further reinforce this theory I was re watching again and the section where Eren tells Armin the book about the outside is illegal comes up. Why would a book that covers factual information about the structure and composition of the outside world be illegal? Unless there were other bits of information the government inside the walled city didn't want the masses to know about. Either to preserve their lives from being Titan fodder..or to maintain ignorance.

I don't buy the protection reason since they send so many off to die with no regard for their lives..so it must be to hide the truth.

I also can't figure who the collosal Titans' pilot is yet..none fit the description. Whoever it is they may well be professionally trained as a pilot.

    4. Jax Cavalera, I think that the jigantic bald titan is the Dot Pixis guy. As it was stated and proven during the episodes, Annie and Eren showed visual similarities between their human and titan forms, and there is only 1 bald dude that comes to mind, Dot Pixis. (actually, the instructor Eren and friends had was bald... So, it could be Keith Shadis too)

  19. I'd like to bring up something else. Does anyone know concretely How Eren got the key? Obviously there was the dream where his dad gave it to him, he wakes up and he has it. But I don't know how he could have gave it to Eren in that alotted timespan. So thoughts have been in my mind about Mikasa. I think she knows something or has made a deal with Eren's dad. Her number one concern is Eren's safety after all. Even if she has to keep some secrets from him. Possibly about his ability to turn into a titan, the origin of titans, or maybe even what's in the basement. Maybe Mikasa is a lot more yandere than we think and there's going to be some rude awakenings after Eren finds this out. Possibly some betrayals and so forth.

  20. Hey guys, I was wondering if any one had any idea what the Praying mantis behind Mikasa in the second ending stood for? I feel its something more important than its letting on.

    1. The praying mantis symbolized that "the world is a cruel place". When Mikasa was lead to believe Eren died she was going to let the titan eat her, then had a flash back where she remembered life has always been like that but she just never realized it. The mantis kills another bug. Her dad kills a goose. Those men killed her parents. Eren and Mikasa killed those men. The titans kill humans. Because the world is a cruel place.

I think the real question should be what the pomegranate stood for? Blood? I think I've seen it as a symbolic fruit in numerous occasions.

  21. The wall cult believe that the walls were made by Gods and should not be modified, meaning that the founder of this religion knew something about the walls that no one else did. Also isn't it funny that the Walls have been given the names Rose, Maria, and Sina? The three names could be the names of the gods that built the walls (if they were built by gods). But there's a twist, the walls were built by the gods to protect humanity, but what if they weren't built to protect humanity but to be their place of rest? If the walls were destroyed then the three gods would be woken and could create a path of destruction, killing humans and titans alike. Assuming that the titans are able to communicate with each other, they would be able to transfer this information to one another, and would only attack the gates because they fear that they might awaken the gods. But than why would they attack humans if they could accidently damage the walls? The show stated no real reason why the titans attack humans besides blood lust, also that the titans do not need anything to survive, and can live forever. My guess is that this is because the titan's are the "protectors" of the tomes (created by the gods) and they will attack anyone who poses a threat to the tomes (i.e. humans). This would explain the reason for the face in the wall, but I have no idea why the human-titans would look like them.

    2. The idea is still in development, and I even realized something deeper(but probably way off the charts). The walls may not have been built as tomes for the gods but they may have actually been built as prisons for their immortal enemies... Titans! I know that this is pretty confusing but in Greek mythology the major gods were the sons of their titan fathers. Later in their life the gods rose up against their fathers and imprisoned them. Maybe its the same thing in the show, assuming that my previous theory is somewhat accurate.

    1. My money is also on the multiple kingdom theory but I don't believe that the other kingdoms would create titans as a weapon or else there would have been other humans or at least physical signs that they are being attacked by another kingdom. When I was doing a little bit more research on my god theory and the reason for human titans I realized something, there is another "kingdom". What do we know about Dr. Yeager and how did he know about the human-titans? From what you hear about him from the local community, they believe that Dr. Yeager is a hero, and is also a very wise man. If he was born within the wall he would of alerted the government about his findings or the military, not keep it secret. This is still a theory in development, so is my god theory, but you can keep up with my AOT theories or contact me at http://avirgintheory.blogspot.ca/

  24. Just to add to a idea that was made awhile back. I woundered how they were able to get wall put up fast enough to keep the titans out. If all the walls are lined with hybrids then maybe they sacrificed them selfs as temp walls tell the stones were up. Also nobody has said anything about why they only come from the south. I also tried to read into the paintings on the wall and think maybe thats were the opposing kingdom is even though that seems to simple. Maybe those paintings on the wall are in the basement atleast i assumed. I also believe that all the titans are just war machines and maybe the world is still filled with people but the goverment is hinding it thats why they try to keep all the info about the out side secret.

  25. Really good speculations about the anime! I'm super curious about what is going on and I can't believe I didn't watch this anime sooner. But then again, I guess I shaved some months off of the eye gouging wait time considering it won't be until sometime in 2015 that the second season is released. But like they always say, don't rush a good thing.

When I saw the titan in the wall, I had to do a double take. I already suspected way before I saw that that there was someone trying to keep the humans under thumb, contained, and "fragile". I do wonder what it is that triggered all the attacks and the demolition of the walls now though. Anywhoo, as curious as I am, I am going to grit my teeth and bare with it until the next season comes out. I just finished the anime yesterday though, so I can tell this will be tough. Thank you for the insight!

Maybe they wake up and the ancestors emerge from them to help or destroy humanity?

    ReplyDelete
  31. You all seem to forget a critical sentence in the beginning of the series around which my theory revolves:
"It seems like mankind needs a common enemy for them to stop war" [something like that]. Which makes me think that (some) humans are behind the rise of the Titans.

I base my theory also on the scene where we see Annie's dad talking to her and saying that however everyone will hate her, he's still by her side. Which makes me think Annie is responsible for the common enemy (she doesn't completely want this imo, because she often shows emotion in her Titan-form).
However, those who gave rise to the Titans, didn't want mankind to go extinct of course, and so they made a wall of Titans.

There are some holes in my theory though, such as why for gods sake would a Hybrid destroy the walls then; maybe to remind mankind of their common enemy?

  33. I think it's Annie's dad. I think that Eren's dad and Annie's dad are somehow connected. There connection kinda goes with a theory I had that the Colossal Titan is Eren's dad. If you watch episode 1, the amount of time between Eren's dad leaving and the CT appearing is too close to be a coincidence. His dad leaves what looks like midday. When Eren, Armin, and Mikasa are on the steps, it looks like late afternoon. Then the now all too familiar lighting that accompanies the appearance of a titan. When Eren's mom is stuck under the house and Eren and Mikasa are trying to help her, she immediately knows what's going on and tells them to leave. Another example is when the CT appears the 2nd time, Eren attacks carelessly. Eren's training vs the CT is no match. Instead of crushing him like a fly, he just disappeared. Maybe the Armored Titan in Annie's dad.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "maybe the Armored Titan is Annie's dad".... Very interesting. That is actually very possible, I don't think that Eren's dad is the CT or else he would probably would have acted completely different the morning of the 1st attack, there is no doubt that he knew something about the attack. From what I could tell he was trying to get away from the district for what ever reason, maybe he had a falling out with Annie's dad or whoever may be involved and they decided it would be best to silence him (i.e. the reason for the attack).

      Delete
    2. Maybe the idea of forsaking your humanity for the better of all has been passed down through the generations. Armin was giving Eren this speech just before he goes beserk and destroys Annie. Whatever plan the CT had it included NOT caring about collateral damage. When they show Eren's dad leaving, he has tears in his eyes and is saying something like I hope your alright. How would he know what happened if he had left town? If he had previous knowledge of the attack why wouldn't he get his family to safety? He recieved orders from his superiors to carry out an attack.

      Delete
    3. If he was given orders to attack by his superiors then he probably would have came up with some sort of excuse to get his family away from the district, and then carry out his plans of attack. Instead he simply packed up and left saying that he was heading to the interior, if Dr. Jaeger was the target and the reason of the attack, than he was attempting to keep his family safe by trying to stay away from them.

  35. I finished the anime last night and I'm glad that I found this thread as it has some good speculations.

Could the titan that appeared within the wall in the last scene of episode 25 be what the wall was named after e.g. Sina/Maria/Rose. Also they seem to be very tall, not as tall as the colossal titan but a few metres shorter, also as some believe that the walls were created by a god/s of some kind could they be them that are inside the walls as they created them to protect humanity and sealed themselves away within their own creation and could there be 1 titan encased within each wall - 3 gods, 3 walls and could this be the case why they say that human hands can't alter the walls as they fear the gods becoming free? I just can't wait for a season two to be announced.

As for where Eren's father is... I don't know. He was riding through the forest to return to Shiganshina to find Eren, who he injects with the titan juice (Ep. 2). Then he leaves. I think he's wanted by one or more factions and he left to protect his son from those who are hunting him.

    1. The weight of the Titan is a pretty interesting fact by itself, but I'm pretty sure that the reason why Titans are so light is because they have a certain amount of hot air running through their bodies. The hot air would make the Titan lighter and still be able to pack-a-punch, also they mentioned that Titans have extremely high body temperature. The hot air inside the Titan would also heat up the Titan itself increasing the body temperature from the inside, I'm also pretty sure that this is how the colossal titan is able to perform actions without breaking the square-cube law.

  40. Im new here and I just finished watching the whole first season. I read so many great theories I don't know where to start. I watched the second ending alot of times and I saw the war of the two kingdoms on the wall. Is the wall hidden somewhere or is it just for the ending? Also I read the translation to the second ending too and it said something about freeing themselves and meeting again. What does that mean to anybody? I also read the comments about Eren's basement obviously it was something very important but don't you think it's a coincidence that when his father decided it was the right time to show him what was in there the wall was destroyed. And I been thinking about how did Annie get passed the gate to go into the forrest and how did she know where Eren and the other squads was going to be? If the titans are immortal or whatever you want to call it then does that make Eren and Annie immortal in some way too? Speaking of Annie what if she is older than people think she is. Think about it she locked herself in a crystal like cocoon does, that mean she froze herself or something? What if Annie is from a group where everybody is a Titan and wants to destroy someone, someone like Eren? As I was writing this I feel like I was off on a few things. But anyway I hope these questions opened up a new theory and if not can someone answer them.

    1. You raised a few very interesting points, the one thing that really racked up my brain was your question if whether Annie and Eren are immortal or not. I do believe that they can be killed much like anyone else, but It is possible that they do have a reduced aging effect. In the show you see Titans with a physical appearance of all ages, but the aging does not seem to hinder the Titans strength or agility.

You also raised the question if Annie is actually older than she appears, she may actually be. If she does have a reduced aging effect from being a Human-Titan than it would be possible for her to be a few years older than she actually is, the same goes for Eren. But of course you don't see the signs of a slow aging process in Eren, but if Dr.Jaeger did turn Eren into a Human-Titan after the original attack on the walls. Than the slow aging effect may take a few years to develop as did Eren's ability to turn into a Titan. Speaking of Dr. Jaeger I do believe that there was a reason why he was willing to show Eren the basement on the day of the attack, you can look up some of my theories on it on my blog: http://avirgintheory.blogspot.ca/

  41. I didn't read every post, I might eventually but..
What if the titans built the walls to keep the people in. That way, the titans always know where the people are. The walls are a false sense of security if titans can just knock them down. Humanity is trapped and doomed, the world is a cruel place.

  42. As people see the titans are in the wall. People say how are the wall so tall and strong? As you recall the colossal titan is a bit over the height of the wall and it could hit the wall down but if there was so many titans couldn't they knock down the wall?As you know the female titan, armored titan and erens titan form
couldn't knock down the wall. Did they know that titans in the wall that look like the colossal titan?

  43. I am probably pretty late adding to all this (didn't read everyones theories) but what if humans and titans coexisted together happily. The Titans were the gods/protectors of all humanity until one day someone wanted to harness that power thus creating that serum to make titan hybrids etc. The power of course being misused, the walls were built as the only defense..this way those seeking the powers can't harness it and this way the Titans could still protect humanity. Each wall could have been named after each Titan/protector/god and maybe a Titan is in each wall. Who knows why they are really there but I have a feeling those titans willingly allowed those walls to be built. Since when deprived of sunlight they become inactive maybe they could no longer be sensed thus the people within remaining safe for so long. Of course evil doers come along and muck it all up.

Another thing those other titans being fake are probably failed experiments and they were just created to find those Titans in the wall. Why they eat humans? To lure the Titans out from their hiding place. Since the Titans were protectors of the people maybe the creator of the failed experiments figured this would bring them out. Maybe they thought they were hiding amongst the people. Maybe Annie thought Eren was one of those guardian Titans in disguise so she tried to capture him alive etc etc etc

Two sides to the whole hybrids is Annies dad wants the power for whatever reason and Erens dad wants to protect the people within the walls and the Titans so maybe thats why he injected Eren to become a protector and to protect himself but IDK I have only watched the anime and I know nothing about the manga...

    1. And maybe Armin is a titan too..maybe he is working with Annie and the others hence why when she looked down at him she didn't kill him. She had no problem killing other scouts whom she too probably trained with so what makes Armin sooo special? There was really no dialogue between them in the anime or connection....time to read the manga aye

      Delete
    2. Maybe Armin knew Eren was a titan all along o.o! He might have brought those books about the world beyond the walls to make Eren interested in leaving, making it easier to snatch Eren up and run...but he spent soo much time with Eren he began to lose interest in his main objective and when the Titans attacked that one day he had to "show" he was still following the plan and he wasn't a traitor to the cause so he transformed and ate Erens mother. I have a feeling that he is going to die making another sacrifice...

    3. I don't think Armin is working with Annie, since there is literally no connection between them in the Anime at any point of time, also I am 100% sure that Armin had no knowledge that Eren was a Human-Titan or else he probably would of attempted to manipulate the events around Eren instead of spending his time trying to figure out what is going on. But now that you mention it, it seems somewhat likely that Annie knew something about Armin that he probably doesn't even know. Maybe Armin is able to make the connection between Titans and Humans so Annie kept him alive for that very reason, I don't know. Also if you are interested in discussing the creation of Titans, you can read up on some of my theories on my blog: avirgintheory.blogspot.com

  44. I have a theory the slaughter theory... If humans are all being lured into the walls for safety so that when the humans have a big enough population the titans come in to eat them. As Eren said "we're all just pigs waiting to be slaughtered"

    1. Why would the titans put something, namely a giant wall, between themselves and what they want? Also, it was explained early on that titans don't need to eat humans to survive, and that they ignore all other forms of life. This leads us to conclude that they were bred/created specifically for one purpose: to seek out and destroy humanity. Kind of like a nuke, but far more effective on an individual basis and far less destructive of valuable living spaces.

  45. After re-watching the series a second time and reading through other peoples thoughts I believe that I have a better grasp on the situation :

    - Annie is part of a group that is/was at war with those humans living inside the walled areas.

    1. She risks a lot to try and kill the Titans held captive and for what reason? It isn't because she hates the titans so it can only be to stop Others from learning the secrets about what they are and where they come from.

    2. She isn't trying to kill Eren, she is trying to take him alive.. likely back to her own "group" where they would attempt to brainwash him and get him to fight for their cause instead of protecting the humans still living inside the walled areas.

    - Erens' dad either was part of that group and broke away or has always been against them.

    - Those in charge of the people inside the walled area are well aware of settlements and life outside their walled zones. They have a law against reading or keeping literature that contains information about the outside world.

    1. Why stop people from knowing about the outside world unless you know something bout it hat you don't want them to find out?

    2. If it were just to keep people inside feeling safe and stop them from wanting to "escape" it still makes you wonder.. why are the powers in charge of the walled civilisation trying to hold everyone prisoner?

    3. They wouldn't have bothered to even endorse something like the Scouts if they were concerned about people trying to get outside so it can't be just people going outside that's the issue it must be people learning about the history of mankind and what drove them to construct the walled area in the first place or worse.

    - The regular titans are not just brain-dead zombies but are most likely under the control/command of the Hybrid Titans. They are minions if you will.

    1. They don't just blindly charge after Hybrid Titans... Annie was held captive for a while and none of the titans made a bolt for her until she gave them the signal. They also never ate her.. just her titan exterior.

    2. They appear to have an autopilot mode which is to generically eat humans. But they can also be ordered to perform more advanced tasks when necessary.

    3. They don't have a lot of weight including in their heads *doctor was able to boot a skull and said it was ultra light*.. which means that either the brain is very small OR they are simply being controlled from an external source and are nothing more than giant avatars. Their diminished motor skills could imply either of these.. many controlled by a single processing unit or human.. or all individually controlled but with a central control mechanism that allows them to communicate wirelessly (no speech or physical gesures).

All of this paints a somewhat familiar picture to a storyline, and it has already been hinted at in previous comments which would imply that there are 2 sides fighting and using Titans/Hybrids as their machines of warfare.

The zombie titans could perhaps be the aftermath from whatever the War event that reset their calander was.. and they simply understand how they work and therefor guide them to do their bidding instead of actively controlling them but either way it doesn't change the plot direction too far.

The only thing that makes me believe they are generated by the outsiders group Annie is a part of would be that their numbers appear to either replenish/increase yet they can't reproduce Sexually or via Mitosis.

So I would predict that in the next season of the show we will learn a lot of this stuff and likely see the war have a 2nd bout which will result in a clean-up of what's left of the Titan scourge and their creators brought to justice.

  46. It would be interesting to learn why the rulers of the Walled society fled to that sanctuary and what crimes they committed.. yes I believe that the people inside the waled area are or were in fact the "bad guys" and now the civilian population are unknowingly protecting them from facing the judgement of their sins.

Well that's my take on things now after a 2nd watch through. Knowing that the titans are able to sleep in hibernation mode when dark and the pilots of these hybrid titans can regenerate would suggest that the walled titans are a last stand or guard squad and will likely break free for he final fight to "catch" viewers by surprise.

well I guess till it comes out I wont' know for sure if I'm close to the truth but that's what I've deduced from the clues. I don't think the walled titans are fueling any advanced reactor or futuristic city below the surface.

Few things that I would be interested to still consider :

With the spoon incident, The doctor lady was about to say something but is interrupted.. what was she going to say. she is also interrupted before she gets to her own thoughts on what the titans are.. I suspect she's realised what I've been thinking and has begun formulating her thoughts from this point.. perhaps.

When you see Annie and Eren fighting.. the priest is talking about the wall..something he said there made me wonder if their cult knows more about the origins than we are preview to.. and what he said is a clue I just can't remember what it was he said now.

Rightio that's all I'll put in now and yeah i've never been into reading mangas so hopefully they release a 2nd season to either confirm or deny my theories either way it's fun to ponder :)

  47. I've got a theory about the religious wall cult.

What if the "cult" was originally not a religious cult, but rather an organization, or an idea (like "Don's mess with the walls, and then some fanatics ran with it and made it a religion), created to prevent the humans inside the walls from tampering/changing the walls and thus to keep the knowledge of there being titans inside a secret. Now this doesn't explain a lot, like why/how the titans are in the walls, or what the walls are even for. This is just an idea I had when reading your blog, cause I definitely think the wall cult either knows more then they are telling, or they play some part in the bigger picture.

I've got a question also: Did the other hybrids (like Annie, the colossal titan, and the armored titan), come from outside or inside the walls? I think it's possible they came from outside the walls. Think about the attack on Shiganshina, that would be a perfect opportunity to turn into human form, and sneak into the inner walls while the mass panic and evacuation is underway.

This also made me think that the flashbacks with Annie and her dad, maybe Annie was picked (when she was fairly young), to be one of the one's to infiltrate the walls (I remember her dad saying something like "they'll all hate you" etc, maybe he was talking about the people inside the walls? And maybe she comes from somewhere outside the walls?

  48. Ok so i have a theory about Annie.

When Annie and Eren were fighting and Eren went berserk, it seemed as if she was trying to escape or something. when she looked up it showed a shot of the sky. (idk if that symbolizes something). So yea, it seemed as is Annie was trying to escape. i believe i remember hearing Annie's dad saying something about Annie coming back. Earlier soon posted that she could have been s human chosen to be a titan. Maybe she was sent in the the city to collect information to see if there are any other titans that they don't know off. Hence when she tried to take Eren, maybe be was taking him as evidence to show her dad. the fact that she was trying to climb the wall shows that she knows that there are other people outside the wall

  49. Everyone is saying that the both Annie, and the other Human-Titans came from beyond the wall, but you have to remember so did everyone else. The current inhabitants of the wall may not have been from outside, but their ancestors were; its just a matter of when.

Annie and the other Human-Titans may not have been from beyond the walls, Eren is a Human-Titan even though he never stepped foot beyond the outer walls in his entire life (I am including the outer walls and Shiganshina). Eren, Annie, and the others human-titan ability may have been genetic not due to experiments, it would explain Dr. Jaeger and the reason why the Government is trying to sweep everything under the rug. I have a bunch of posts on my blog on this subject, if you would like to check them out you can go to my blog: http://avirgintheory.blogspot.ca/ If you want to see my full list of AOT theories click the "List of Posts" tab on my blog and it will instantly redirect you to my list of 17+ AOT theory posts!

  50. So I've been reading all comment and I think that I have a theory as well. What if Erens father was the giant in the beginning of the series. The one that broke the wall. It sounds dumb but when you think about it. Erens dad leaves and not much later, the giant titan appears. But if you look close, you may see something. When the giant titan appeard, you saw a lightning struck and steam. It is the same lightning struck as when Eren transforms. So i know for sure that the giant titan is a human. And that maybe the titan in the wall has a connection with that. It's just a thought though. you never know. XD

  51. I don't know if anyone noticed this, but we first see Annie in episode 2. Eren walks into a courtyard where they house refugees and notices a Garrison handing her a piece of bread. She looks about 10 so I'm not sure if the whole, she's really a lot older than she looks theory is still possible. I think I saw someone comment about that here. I only now noticed it my second time watching the show

  52. I remember hearing some where that the Colossal and Armored titan were both human and we're looking for the other human/titans so they could take them away so the humans would be safe. Maybe they released all the titans inside the walls and see if they could provoke anyone to becoming a titan. I already know who the CT and AT are but I won't say. It'd be a huge spoiler alert.

About the wall, it doesn't make sense that if the wall was made up of Titans, why was the rock the CT kicked not have any Titan parts in it. Could they have checked to make sure there wasn't any Titans there? If so how?
    I
Annie Leonhart also confuses me deeply. She said once that "I just want the weak, who get swept along with the flow, to be considered human too." Could she have been talking about the theory that titans were once humans? Also when she says "I have failed to become a warrior." Is she saying she failed to become part of the scout regiment or she just failed at something else.

So many questions. Please leave a comment on what you think so I can know a little more about this.

    1. That first bit is a good point, and I agree. Also, thank you for being a decent human being and not posting spoilers. Furthermore, and to be honest, it's been almost two years since I watched the anime and a lot of the details are a bit fuzzy. However, I'll try to answer at least one of them:

Since watching the anime, I've honed my theories a bit. I believe the titans in the wall crystallized themselves like Annie did, and then the powers that be covered them up with a wall. If their entire body was crystallized, then it's possible the CT kicked them so hard they shattered. The first time he did this in Shiganshina there really wasn't any way to check, seeing as how the entire city was overrun in the span of a day and no one's been back there since. Of course they could have checked to see if there were titan bits amongst the rubble after the battle of Trost, but if the government is as corrupt and secretive as I believe them to be, anything they found would have been covered up.

As for Annie, I'm not sure. I don't actually remember either of those quotes; I may not have been watching the same translation as you, or I may have just simply forgotten. My guess about the "weak people" quote is that perhaps someone in her life was weak and treated poorly by those who were strong. Perhaps she, like Eren, is driven to become powerful so she could right the wrongs that were done to her or those that she loved. Perhaps the government made them weak, and so she wants to overthrow them. From this quote alone I get a feeling that we don't know something vitally important about Annie's past that is crucial to who she has become.

The second quote doesn't make any sense either. She's one of the strongest warriors in the world, and was given the choice to join the military police, which she took. If she had wanted to be part of the scout regiment, she could have so that can't be it. I really can't say anything more because I don't know the context surrounding the quotes. Could you tell me which episodes and at approximately what time she said both of those?

  53. No one has mentioned anything about when Annie tried to merge with Eren near the end of their fight. does this hold significance?

    ReplyDelete
  54. If the walls were built before the humans inhabited the area what would the purpose of the walls be?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I may have a theory, a bit of a stretch but might be worth a shot. Apologies if a similar theory has already been mentioned !
Throughout the series we see a lot of references to how humans battled one another prior to the appearance of the titans. What if the titans were the result of a super-soldier, Captain America type of an experiment gone wrong. These would be the mindless runaway titans though. Maybe the human-titans are improved versions which the humans were trying to achieve in the first place. Erens dad could have been one of the researchers involved. And also Eren seems to be somewhat better at summoning a titan body than the other human-titans (Annie, At n CT) as in he can summon a titan with skin and all.
The next part i think has already been mentioned. The improved good guy titans decided to protect humanity by forming a circle and fusing to form the walls. And the wall was constructed over them which would also act as a way to block the sunlight there by putting the titans on sleep mode.
Although a huge problem with this theory would be why a human-titan would be on mission against humanity i.e Annie Leonhart and possibly others. It might have something to do with her dad. We see him telling her to see everyone as her enemy and come back and find him or something to that effect.
Also what is it that humanity has done to these titans to so make them hate humans? Was it the fact that they were deformed during these experiments ? And why are the human-titans fighting against the humans ? How do they have control over the other lesser titans ?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I can't help but get the vibe throughout the whole show that the titans are humans in a different form, and are somekind of a hell existence for humans who either died or have been experimented on and that they are suffering a lot the whole time. First off, the mention of the weightlessness of the titans, and how their appearance might not be what they consist of. Second, if you've seen the Ilsya's notebook ova you know about the titan who spoke and bowed with respect until the girl panicked and then seemingly out of pure agony he ate her but kept her in the tree like he's in sorrow and like shes precious. Like he was lonely. Third the whole talk about the nature of humans and how humans are still their own worst enemy despite the existence of a higher enemy. Also, the human appearance of the titans. They all look like average humans, babies, toddlers, seniors with beards. Theres such a freaky vibe to them and for me they metaphorically resemble the low of humanity.. an image of humans feeding on the weakness of other humans just like always. During the whole show what kept me hooked is this metaphorical idea and the connection between titans and humans.

    ReplyDelete
  57. About the "titan wall" theory, isn't there a manga that takes place in earlier days of this same "city"? What if, in the end of that manga it had a bunch of titan/human hybrids choosing to be the building blocks for the walls, leaving the friends and family for a possibly never-ending sleep, and as a defense, if anything was to get through the walls, because, as I have seen stated earlier, these humans might be immortal in titan form. With that said, that also means that, if they were to lose the means to create or reproduce titan/human hybrids, this would be the only way to secure their last stronghold, as long as possible. And my theory as to why there are titans roaming around, is because of a failed attempt to create the means to have human/titan hybrids again. And as for the reason as to why there are hybrids again is that there has been a recent discovery on behalf of Dr. Jaeger, and possibly an enemy, that has led to this working once more (hence the cellar being an underground passage, could be the means that the enemy got this on their hands as well)
