'Attack on Titan' Speculation: What's in the Basement?

WAIT A MINUTE!
The greatest part of speculative discussion is that someone might point out something that I missed, allowing me to either improve or altogether abandon my own theories. However, these Attack on Titan posts have been edited and updated numerous times. They were in desperate need of abridgment, so I've summarized the theories here (WARNING: SPOILERS!):

That said, feel free to read the following post. However, most of these theories have been disputed, so be sure to read the summary post!

That's the question that's on all our minds: What's in that basement? And, if it was so important, why did Eren's dad keep it hidden away? While watching episode ten again yesterday, I had an epiphany; one not even tied to the episode. Be warned, this post will be filled with spoilers (up to the end of episode eleven)... (UPDATED!)

I have the first four tankoban (collection of chapters) of the manga, but I haven't read them. I had a hard time deciding whether I should read ahead and spoil the surprise or wait for each episode and enjoy the feeling of suspense I get every time the next episode ends. After a long struggle, I decided on the latter. I say this to let everyone know that I don't actually know what's in the basement, but I have a theory. If you, dear reader, have read ahead in the manga and decide to spoil my fun and everyone else's in the comments, know that I will personally hunt you down and gut you like a fish. PLEASE NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS.

Or curb stomp you into a gooey paste...
So, what's in the basement? Ever since the first episode, we've been wondering what was down there. Then the titans attacked and the subject was sort of glazed over and forgotten. Now, by the end of episode ten, we're back to that question. Well, I figure it has something to do with what the titans actually are. What do I think they are? I think... the titans are humans. (At least some of them anyway...)

CONFIRMED: With the introduction of Blondie in episode 17 and the events that unfold after, it's confirmed that there are more "human-form" titans. Now the question is, how many are there?

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?!?!?
Think about it. If this world they live in is actually Earth several hundred or thousand years from now, where did the titans come from? I'm looking out the window now and I don't see any. Moreover, the titans look like us, creepily so.

*Shivers*
Now consider this: the titans can only be killed permanently if you slice a good chunk out of the back of their necks, the same spot that Eren emerged from when he finally ended his titan rampage. The theory goes, "If you kill the driver, the machine stops working."

*Scwhing!*
There are, however, problems with this theory. If all titans are humans, why did the other titans attack the Eren titan? And how did Eren retain his titan extermination aspirations if everyone that is eaten turns into a titan? Is everyone that is eaten turned into a titan? Now at the end of episode eleven, Eren, in titan form, attacks Mikasa (what a twist!). Are the other titans humans that have lost control and are moving purely on instinct? Update: If there aren't people inside them, why does cutting a chunk out of their necks kill them?

Although some of them do seem to have some sort of plan...
Then there's another theory: When Eren turned into the titan again in episode nine to protect Mikasa and Armin, there's a bright flash of lightning very similar to the lightning that accompanied the massive titan that kicked in the gates. It's even the same colors:

An orange lightning explosion with a green hue in the background...
So the question is: Who's the massive titan? I don't think this theory is very strong, but perhaps the massive titan is Eren's father. If you think about it, Eren's father left shortly before the massive titan appeared the first time. It's the same argument of, "I'm not saying I'm Batman, but no one has ever seen Batman and I in a room together." It's a very shallow and weak theory, but possible, seeing as how his father is the only other person we've seen in possession of the "Titan Juice".

DEBUNKED: Why would Eren's father have kicked in the wall? That makes absolutely no sense, especially since it killed his wife and made Shigansha titan territory. So, I think it's safe to say that his father is not the Behemoth titan. If that's the case... who is the Behemoth titan?

And there goes another question: What exactly did Eren's father inject him with?  Was it some super soldier serum devised thousands of years ago that went horribly wrong, and inadvertently created the titans? Or was it literally titan juices extracted from a titan? If so, where did he get it? All titans evaporate when they die, right?

*Fizzle* *Pop*
And now we're back to the original question: What's in the basement?

THEORY 1: I think Eren's father has a titan locked up down there, in human form, somehow kept in stasis while his father does experiments on it.  (DEBUNKED: The legion has captured titans before and performed experiments on them, so I think it's safe to say that this one's wrong.)

THEORY 2: Sweet cuppin' cakes... what if it's a computer?
What if he has a computer, or some other sufficiently advanced technology, in the basement? A computer with all sorts of data on it regarding the titans, and machines and technology to produce the "titan juice"? In episode nine, while Eren is having a flashback to when his dad injected him with the titan juice, the subs I watched say, "I'm sure Their memories will teach you how to use it."

While these are not official subs, I have to wonder what "it" is, and how "Their" (capital 'T') memories will help him to know how to use whatever "it" is. So, I'm revising my theory and throwing it out there: I think he may have a computer, or some other form of technology (maybe as simple as a book), from ages past containing all sorts of knowledge on the titans locked away in the basement. But why in the world, if whatever was down there was really so important, did he keep it a secret?

(9-28-13) UPDATE: With the end of the season, this particular question has been left unanswered. I've refined the speculation, as well as speculated on other events that have happened, in this post: 'Attack on Titan' Ep. 25: Something's Odd About Those Walls... (Warning: Spoilers!)

Perhaps we can't handle the truth? That those monsters are actually just like us?
At least now we have our main plot. I really hope that Attack on Titan doesn't end prematurely. I hope that the producers give it the necessary time and attention it needs to blossom into something amazing. Even now with only eleven episodes out, the show is incredible. The character building and backstory building is fantastic, the music is absolutely incredible, the animation is breathtaking, and the eyes... OH MAN, THE EYES.

*Gasp!*
I know, I know. It seems like every time I post something about this show, it always has something about the eyes in it. But... man... THOSE EYES.

UPDATE: With the release of episode seventeen, there are new questions to be answered... and new theories to postulate. You can read my thoughts on them here: 'Attack on Titan' Speculation: Who's the Giant Blondie?

A smokin' hot titan? (LOL, puns...)

If you want to read more speculation about the show, here's where it's at:
Some of us like the feeling of suspense we get from waiting for the next episode. I will ask that you please do not put spoilers in the comments. Please be decent people.

    1. I would have to agree with that. At the very least, Eren's dad has to know who they are because, chances are, he made them that way with the titan juice.

    2. In Eren's flashback, does anyone think it is strange that Dr. Jaeger can use syringes, presumably an advanced form of medicinal technology, when the entire population seems to have access to only flintlock guns and cannons?

The level of technology he has is completely inconsistent with what the rest of the public has access to. Why is he there in Wall Maria rather than working with the Survey Corps for a cure for the Titan disease if he had the technological knowhow to cure an entire population of the plague? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless he wants the Titans to crush humanity or he has to keep his abilities a secret from the totalitarian government in place. My suspicion is that, somehow, the State leading Humanity created the Titans and they got loose from them somehow. Perhaps it was some response to the plague that Dr. Jaeger "cured", seeing as we don't know how he did it yet. We will probably find that the origin of titans to have something to do with "memories" like he mentioned.

    3. That is a good point about the syringes. Perhaps he's keeping his advanced knowledge a secret from everyone because he doesn't know who to trust? Or perhaps he believes the government would use the technology to hurt instead of help?

You've also go to think of the 3DM Gear, and how advanced that is. No one, except for a few engineers, knows how those things work, and they are worked on in secret. I think the government knows more than they're letting on. As I said above, the "titan juice" could have been a super soldier serum gone horribly wrong, which lines up with your theory about the government creating the titans.

Now the question is: Who are the "good guys"?

  2. Here is what I think. But first let me say.
I have not read the manga (hate the manga...yeah it gives away the story but there is no sound and it doesn't move)I have also not gone searching for anything in wiki or other sites for spoilers so I can get more of the story.

    Now, on with my opinion....
    Speculation on the titans:
I think that YES some, most, or maybe even all titans are humans with artificial bodies. (I would like to point out that some titans are small enough that it may be difficult for a human to fit inside without sticking out / the obvious human shaped bulged)
Notice how they explained that all titans are incredibly hot...well riding on it being fiction I would say that is a main factor as to why they can regenerate so fast, but more than that. If a person were scaled up to the size of a titan they would be much stronger and more durable than the titans seem to be...for instance when Eren punches a titan and part of his arm dissolves into mist. Meaning that the titans are not comprised of flesh and bone the same as humans, not to mention when whats her face says that the bodies of titans are far to light...however I do agree that for the most part humans are controlling the titans bodies. I also think titans are out of control and have no intelligence because the "Titan juice" causes hallucinations unless your mind is purely set on one goal, or rather "Focused". As was shown when eren was dreaming he was back at home with his family
    Now onto the story.
    Identifying characters:
I think erens dad is NOT the giant titan OR the armored titan...Firstly because if he were he would have no reason to have helped people the way he did as a doctor, and he would have at least gotten his family out before anything happened. Not to mention the fact that he made a promise to show eren the basement when he got back (which implies that he meant to come back while things were safe without titans)...Then there is one more thing to further my hypothesis. When it showed him returning home he was praying for their safety....and since he had to return home it shows he was not anywhere near there at the time.
I think that either some, or all titans are capable of utilizing special abilities, such as the armored and giant titan, however that requires intelligence (as was demonstrated by the giant and armored titans) OR humans living within the walls other than eren have the ability to turn into titans (as you yourself suggested).
    To be continued

    1. I agree wth some of your theories accept for why Eren rampaged that time i think its because he's body was exhausted from turning into a titan so many times so when he turned into a titan to pick up the rock he fell unconscious and his body started to rampage acting on instinct until the titan knocked its self out,i also think that Eren is not like all the other normal titans because he was unable to heal while his main body was unconscious here is my main theory though human titans have got two brain kinda like a Kaiju or a Brontosaurus the reason being because they have such huge bodies.

      Delete
  3. Continuation

    Now onto the walls.
the walls are a great thing that help protect the lives of many humans, however they are kinda fishy....They were made a long time ago. No one knows how the walls were made or who made them, and a religious faction says they "came from god"....I think there is much more to the walls than anyone realizes, however I also think that someone knows something about the walls and just isn't talking. Like this monarch they keep talking about...the king has not made an appearance in the anime yet, and I think he knows something.... I mean he is the friggin king. But other than him I think that the leaders of the religious groups who don't want anyone to touch the walls as well as at least one of the military commanders knows something else about whats going on.
As for whats in the basement of his house....I can only speculate. But my best guess is that it is one of 3 things
    1. a "cure" to undo the "titan juice"
    2. Documents and years of research that tell the story of the walls as well as the titans, and eren himself.
    3. an unplug zone. Because they could pull this entire anime off as a matrix style story and have everyone wake up from the "game"....this theory would explain the willingness to kill so many people all the time, as well as the perfect setup of the way things seem to play out. As well as the way the anime started with eren waking up under the tree and wasn't sure what was going on at first.
However I do admit this last theory is highly unlikely...but wouldn't be a bad thing if it did turn out this way either....infact I think it would breathe a new life into the anime that would open up so many more doors for it...especially because this story is taking place in the FUTURE. but the best weapons they have other than the 3d gear are HE cannon shells.
I mean we have better artillery now don't we?

    1. Interesting points. Back when I wrote this, episode 11 was the most recently released, so my ideas have changed quite a bit too. I've only read the first tankoban of the manga (chapters 1-4, which cover episodes 1-5) after watching the anime, and I've been trying to avoid spoilers like the plague, so I'm really just pulling these theories out of my butt.
      - The Walls: As you said, are very strange. Although there had been a few instances when something had been said about them, they really didn't outright say it until episode 14, Eren's trial. In that episode, there are several "Wallists" who get angry that someone promotes the option to close the walls permanently. I agree that something is up with the walls. How were they built, and who built them... or what built them?
      - The Technology Loss: If this is in the future, how did humanity lose all the technology we had? The first chapter of the manga (and, coincidentally, the title of the first episode) is titled, "To you, 2,000 Years From Now". So where did it all go? We definitely have better now, so it's possible that anyone who knew how to make better artillery died without telling someone else, or the plans were lost, or the machines used to make them are gone.
      - The Date: What's up with the date? It's the 845. The subs I watch say the titans appeared "just over a century ago", which makes it sound like a relatively recent problem. What, then, happened 845 years ago that had such an impact as to restart the calendar? Or is that when the titans appeared to begin with? They said that they had a hundred years of piece within the walls, so perhaps year 1 was when the titans appeared. I wish they would clear this up and say it plainly...
      - I do agree that Eren's dad isn't the Behemoth titan. That was an extremely shallow idea. As I said, pulling these things out of my butt.
      - Dat Matrix theory. I doubt that's the case, but something is definitely strange about the whole world. They have 3DM gear, but not tanks or aircraft? What about assault rifles? Where did all the technology go?!?

Anyhoo, thanks for the comment. I love this speculation and theorizing stuff. It's a good workout for my brains.

    2. More on the matrix theory....Do you remember episode 7 when eren in his titan form punched the second titan and knocked his head into a tower...some kinda weird lines of light regenerated his hand....this could show as a bigger hint to there being a matrixish element, or it could just be cool animations...

  4. Oh and this got cut off...But as it is revealed "over a century ago humanity faced a new threat, the titans." The wall and the titans "sprang up" at about the same time....

    1. That's racist.

Ha, just kidding. But no, really. Just because she's Asian doesn't mean she's "the answer". She's special, being the last of her race, but I doubt she has anything inside her that kills titans... other than her crazy-awesome titan slaying skills, that is.

      Delete
    2. Yeah but I mean think about when she killed that one dude when she was 9ish....she broke the floor boards and knife handle...I don't care if your Asian or not...no 9 yr old girl who's greatest achievement in life is learning how to do a special kind of stitching / knitting is gonna do that even if it is an anime. AND on top of that, she stabbed him right through the hear like a pro...there is gotta be more behind that than just for show and luck.
Then I wold also like to point out the scenes where lightening is on her brain. This is an event that only happens to her. It could bee just to show the wheels spinning, but I think its more significant because this general type of thing is never shown for ANYONE ELSE...Not even the little light that comes on above someones head when they get an idea...she is the only one who gets that kind of reveal on ideas and ways of thinking.
Maybe im just reading too much into it...but we will see some day im sure.

      Delete
    3. yeah i agree because when she realized that she had to fight to survive she almost broke that knife with one hand

      Delete
  7. Not to mention when it showed the flashback to when she snapped and killed that guy with the knife when she was like 9...member. She broke the floor and the knife when she went to stab him...you gotta be hella strong to do that right?
And I don't think the armored one was Thomas. I think it was that other guy...the one who was always with the taller dark haried guy...can't member his name. Eren asked for his help to learn how to balance on that test when they were in the army training grounds and they went for a stroll at night to a lake...I think it was that blond guy. he just seems suspicious to me.....But then again I know what your saying about Thomas. When he was eaten he was swallowed hole by that titan right? and I didn't see any blood so maybe he pulled an eren and got outa there and is hiding out....

Yeah that last ending you were talking about. The matrix one. I think that would explain a lot of stuff....like when they only have old fashioned guns in the future (muzzle loaders I think they are called...from like the 1800's)
And plus it would make sense why some humans who can turn into titans would want to destroy all humans if it was a game or fake or something right? they would be like the NPC's....I could see that.
    From a different guy....

    1. The guy you're thinking of is Reiner Braun. He did look a lot like the armored titan...

All I'm saying is that when it's revealed why these special titans are trying to destroy humans it's either going to be an amazing twist, or a horrible let down. Let's hope it's the former.

  9. Yep. for sure the armored titan is Reiner Braun....I just saw episode 17 and you can tell.
He gets crushed by the female titan and regenerates...not only that but the female was looking for eren and after armin told Reiner Braun that he was at the rear center the female changed direction and headed for that location directly after making contact with Reiner even after armin said that eren was crushed by a titan in the front right loud enough for the female to hear him...

    1. I'm not convinced that he is, although they do look remarkably similar. Also, I'm still not sure Blondie was looking for Eren.

Read here for more speculation: http://goongalasgrumbles.blogspot.com/2013/08/attack-on-titan-speculation-whos-giant.html

    2. Well think about it. The female was looking for someone. Thats the only reason that she would stop to check who the person was (when she took off his hood). And as soon as armin said that eren got crushed and was dead she stopped her attack (which saved whats his names life)....like litterally as soon as he said that she stopped moving. To me that proves she was looking for him. But after she caught Reiner and "crushed him in her hand" (then he regenerated) she changed direction and started looking again.

      Delete
    3. I don't think she stopped because she thought she had accidentally crushed Eren, I think she stopped because Armin yelled Jean's name out loud enough for her to hear it.

      2. Dr Jeager went to Mikasa's house because he was a doctor doing regular check ups and possibly working on a cure to some sort of plague that happened prior to the show (as was revealed in the first episode).
      3. It's been a long time since I've watched that episode, so I'll have to re-watch it to see if I can figure out why Annie's father said that to her.

  12. I think the timing of Eren saying he wanted to explore the world and the Massive Titan kicking the gate was far too coincidental. I think his dad became the titan, and wanted to help him find his freedom, because clearly he knew in the process Eren would discover he too was a titan, and could learn to explore outside the gate with time. He probably also knew that the key was important because he would never be able to get to the basement without first having discovered he was also a titan, Via some strange genetic experiment ala Dr. Hyde. Right? Definitely. Makes sense to me. The timing of that one day otherwise made no sense.

    1. Why would Eren's father have kicked in the wall? It makes no sense for him to do so, especially since it killed his wife and made Shigansha titan territory. He also said that he wanted to show Eren what was in the basement. How could he if he destroyed Shigansha and drove humanity back to Wall Rose?

I think his father was on the verge of some sort of breakthrough and left to make preparations with colleagues elsewhere. The titans knew he was close, so they destroyed his home in hopes that the attack would also destroy his work, or at the very least cut him off from it. If there's any coincidence, that seems the most logical.

Also, Eren wasn't a titan until his father injected him with some sort of "titan juice". Said "juice" either awakened dormant titan abilities already inside him OR the "juice" gave him the ability to transform.

  14. I think its unlikely that there is a computer down there. Mainly because I believe that the show is telling a story of an alternate earth, where the normal events of history where interrupted by the appearance of the titans. The technology used, the clothing (especially in the capital), and the architecture, seem to suggest a society that resembles something from (at the very least from) the year 1800 or mid 1800's. Since humanity is relatively safe inside the walls, I think its safe to assume that society would progress at the same rate as it did in the real world. That being said, if society within the wall seems to be around the 1800's level of development, that would place the appearance of the titans a century before that, around the 1700's.

I'm not however ready to dismiss your theory entirely, because if the world of AoT is actually post apocalyptic, it would really help explain a lot of things, like the appearance of the titans, perhaps the results of some futuristic genetic engineering gone horribly wrong.

However, I just can't get over the fact the humanity doesn't remember anything about such an advanced world with the ability to create titans, because the humans within the wall would remember such a time as they would only be about one generation removed from it (100 years) like the oldest member of the society in the wall could at least be 70 meaning his parents would have definitely been alive during a time before the titans. Also, a society that advanced would at least leave some of its huge infrastructure behind, instead of just what appears to me mostly forest. This is assuming of course the initial appearance of the titans caused the collapse of this futuristic society, its possible that the appearance of the titans could be an apocalypse in a post-apocalyptic world were society has been regressed for a long time. But appcocalypse-ception just seems a little far fetched to me.

  16. I think that the titans were originally a government experiment to create better, faster, stronger, bigger, and smarter humans, but messed up the smarter and better part. Or they could have been trying to create workers after a big calamity that set back most technology and reset the calendar, but something went wrong. Since they appeared over seven hundred after the calendar reset, they could have been contained or perhaps they were originally good, but gained bloodlust.

If they had been created as workers, and didn't have bloodlust, they could have been the ones to build the walls as a safe haven for humanity in case another calamity occurred. As they don't have to eat or sleep or drink and are practically solar-powered, they would have been a cheap-ish, sustainable workforce that, without thought, would only have to be told what to do. But something set them against humanity and perhaps they could be turned back. Eren's basement could have something that turns them back into the workforce-titans, if that's what they were originally.

And my theory about the human-titans is that they were created by Dr. Yeager and the government. Like Dr. Yeager thought it was to help humanity, but the government had different ideas. IDK why, but the government could have brainwashed, blackmailed, threatened, or otherwise convinced the human-titans besides Eren to destroy the wall and such. And the female titan attempting to grab Eren without killing him could be seen as an attempt to retrieve him for whoever.

    1. You're wrong on so many levels...Dr.Jaegar did not create titans, they were never a workforce (although some titan shifter (Eren) can control the titans this is pressumbably what many people believe to be how humans made the walls (also that wall theory, Titans never made the walls THEY LITERALLY ARE THE WALLS there are titans in the walls. Also that solar powered theory you had is some-what accurate titans love mobility after a certain amount of hours in sunlight so what had happened was who ever controlled the coordinate (the basic mind control device for titans/(possibly humans) controlled the titans and made them go into formations (reminder these titans are all 50 meter titans) and they had ordered them to harden their bodies and humans then deprived the titans of sunlight and they lost mobility so thus becoming fortified walls, also that theory about the basement containing a cure to the titan virus may be a good theory, but although I can not see that happening due to the fact thousands of (former titans) people would go insane due to the fact
they literally have memories of eating their family members friends and other human beings.

  18. My guess is that the original titan is inside Eren's basement. Regarding the 3DMG's, I'm guessing that the blades are made from the same material as titan bones, as it is very light but strong at te same time, and Hange mentioned that she kicked a titan's head and it was very light. What better material to use to slaughter titans than their own bones eh?

    1. The blades are made of ultra-hardened steel, explained in episode 6 during the "what we can share so far" bits. Remember, titan bodies evaporate after they die, including the bones, albeit at a slower rate.
